PRESIDENT ABDULLAH GÜL VISITS ROMANIA
President Abdullah Gül paid an official visit to Romania on March 2-4. State Minister Kürşad Tüzmen and Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım accompanied Gül. Gül said on March 2 that his visit to Romania would bring momentum and strengthen cooperation between Ankara and Sofia. "We will exchange views about opportunities for bilateral cooperation as well as recent developments in our shared region and internationally," he said before leaving for Romania. Saying that Romania joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007, Gül said that Turkish-Romanian relations have shown great progress in recent years. Stressing that there are no political problems between the two countries, Gül said that progress in bilateral cooperation promotes peace and stability in the Balkans and Black Sea region.
PM ERDOĞAN’S TOUR OF THREE BALKAN COUNTRIES
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo on March 24. Erdoğan visited Bosnia-Herzegovina as part his tour to three Balkan countries including Albania and Bulgarian as well. State Ministers Kürşad Tüzmen and Nimet Çubukçu, Industry and Trade Minister Zafer Çağlayan and a group of deputies accompanied Erdoğan during his visit. Security and stability of Balkans were on the agenda of his meetings with officials of the three countries.
93RD ANNIVERSARY OF ÇANAKKALE NAVAL VICTORY
Ceremonies took place throughout Turkey to mark the 93rd anniversary of the Çanakkale Naval Victory and commemorate the martyrs of March 18. President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan participated in a ceremony in Çanakkale, along with Deputy Premier Hayati Yazıcı, State Minister Murat Başesgioğlu, Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay, Health Minister Recep Akdağ, Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül, Interior Minister Beşir Atalay, Public Works and Housing Minister Faruk Nafiz Özak, Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım, Industry and Trade Minister Zafer Çağlayan, Energy Minister Hilmi Güler and Environment Minister Veysel Eroğlu.
19TH ANKARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
The 19th Ankara International Film Festival, organized by the World Mass Media Research Foundation, screened a rich collection of films from March 13-23. John Cassavetes, the pioneer of American independent cinema, was remembered with five films in the festival, including two from the peak of his career starring his wife Gena Rowlands, “A Woman Under the Influence” and “Opening Night.” Nine unique adaptations and homage to Lewis Carroll's immortal heroine Alice were screened in the “Through the Looking Glass” section. The Czech animation legend Jan Svankmajer's “Alice / Neco z Alenky” was also acreened. A twisted adaptation of the unique surreal style of Svankmajer, the film uses stop-motion and live-action, mixing dreams with nightmares.
